In case you didn’t notice, this is just a note to let you know that the war on people who identify as women has started.
Or, as people who identify as women around the globe know, it has escalated.
In case you didn’t hear, yesterday the leaders of two of the most powerful countries on the planet introduced or proposed legal means to deny women control over their bodies and legal protection when they are not safe in their own homes.
These nations have declared their intention to deny autonomy, dignity, safety and personhood to people who identify as women.
In case you weren’t aware, changes that happen in two of the most powerful nations in the world will always have an effect elsewhere.
In the first case, the effect is literally because the gag order stops aid organizations that operate around the world from communicating information about abortion–even if they get funding from another country to provide that information and service. In the second case, the ripple effect of making domestic a civil rather than a criminal offence when it doesn’t result in hospitalization enhances both the perception and reality that violence is a right of men.
In case you were thinking “it can’t happen here”, don’t believe it. Those freedoms and protection that were so easily stripped away took many years and a lot of very hard work to get.
Progress is the result of improving lives rather than destroying them.
In case you were wondering, this is not what progress looks like.
